Doctors warn of possible medical disaster from flawed Sydney reactor
=20
Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW) today accused the =
Federal Government of endangering local residents and the wider =
Australian community following confirmation that there is an earthquake =
fault line under the site of a planned new nuclear reactor in suburban =
Sydney. =20
MAPW is the Australian affiliate of Nobel Peace Prize winning =
International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War representing =
60 affiliates worldwide.

"The cracks under the reactor are nothing compared to the cracks that we =
see in arguments justifying the need for the reactor" said Dr Bill =
Williams.=20

"The result of an earthquake at the reactor site will be disastrous." Dr =
Bill Williams of MAPW participated in the expert panel conducted by the =
Australian nuclear regulatory body, ARPANSA, on the license application =
for the Lucas Heights replacement nuclear reactor in December 2001.

"A reactor sitting on a fault-line has the potential of breaching the =
reactor containment, resulting in dispersal of toxic radiation into the =
neighbourhood. You do not site a nuclear reactor on a fault-line. =
End-of-story." stated Dr Williams.

MAPW Executive Officer Ms Giji Gya points out that "ARPANSA and ANSTO =
(the agency constructing the reactor) have a responsibility to =
Australian citizens, not the nuclear industry. This (fault-line) =
discovery seems to point to the lack of scrutiny over the =
siting-approval process and the process of this replacement reactor =
project in general. As MAPW keeps saying, there are better - and safer - =
alternatives."=20

Dr Williams qualifies, "Australia would be better to spearhead R&D into =
the already well-developed alternatives to produce isotopes needed for =
nuclear medicine. ANSTO and ARPANSA have failed to demonstrate, through =
clear documentation, public safety in the event of an accident or =
terrorism sabotage at the reactor."=20
