Govt urged to rule out Nowingi nuclear dump
The Victorian Government is under pressure to rule out using a
proposed toxic waste facility at Nowingi in the state's north-west,
to store radioactive waste as well.
The Nationals say the Government refused to rule out the practice
during questioning in Parliament this week.
The Nationals health spokesman, Hugh Delahunty, says the disposal of
radioactive waste used to be a Federal Government responsibility.
"But because there was games played by the states, now the Federal
Government has said the states have a responsibility," he said.
"We think that the Government could say, 'It's going to be used for
toxic waste, why not use it for low level radioactive waste and use
the same site'?"
