A group of traditional owners in central Australia has voiced its
opposition to a Federal Government proposal to build a nuclear waste
dump on its land.
The Federal Government has nominated three sites in the Northern
Territory for its planned nuclear waste dump.
One of them is Mt Everard, about 27 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs.
Arrente traditional owner Raelene Martin says the Commonwealth did not
consult with families living near Mt Everard about their plan for the dump.
"We live 10 kilometres away from the proposed site, we have traditional
ties to the whole region and it just frustrates the families out here
that the Government hasn't approached us to talk about the dump," she said.
"You know I don't even think they've consulted the Central Land Council.
We don't want to live next to a nuclear waste dump."
