More than 550 New Zealand navy personnel who watched nine British nuclear 
tests at Christmas Island and the  Malden Islands in Kiribati in 1957-1958 
have suffered long term damage from their exposure to the atmospheric 
explosions, research released yesterday says. Blood samples taken from the 
veterans showed strong links between radiation exposure, genetic damage and 
various cancers, especially blood and bone cancers, said Al Rowland of 
Massey University's Institute of Molecular Biosciences, who led the study. -
