THE ORGANIZATION OF PAPUAN INDEPENDENCE
OPM (Organisasi Papua Merdeka)
and THE NATIONAL LIBERATION ARMY OF WEST PAPUA
TPN (Tentara Pembebasan Nasional Papua Barat)
Final Statement of the Joint High Congress of the OPM and TPN
Arso Sub-District, Jayapura, West Papua
November 24, 2000
Considering:
The recent developments in the political situation in West Papua and the continuing desire of the West Papuan people for independence from the Republic of Indonesia;
The ill-desired efforts of the Indonesian government to force its own concept of autonomy upon the West Papuan people;
The unclear strategy of the Papuan Presidium Council in answering the heightening of West Papuan independence aspirations, including defense of the Morning Star flag, the long-held symbol of the West Papuan people's self-confident believe in their distinct identity.
Remembering:
The Resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations - UNGA Res. 1514 on December 14, 1960 - acknowledging the right of independence for colonized countries;
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of December 10, 1940, which asserts the right of a People to Self-Determination;
The Preamble of Indonesia's own Constitution (1945), whose inspiring opening words are, "Very truly, independence is really the right of every race and nation, so that the colonization and domination of other people in the world must be wiped out - for it is not suitable to humanity and justice;"
The Preamble and the Basic Statement of the Organization of Papuan Independence (1971) proclaiming West Papua independence.
We hereby reaffirm:
The West Papuan people need Full Independence, Sovereignty and Self-government in the West Papuan motherland.
The OPM, the overarching and oldest independence organization, and the
TPN, the long-serving West Papuan military force, support all those struggling for West Papuan independence.
