Papuan Task Force told to leave headquarters

JAKARTA (JP): The Jayapura city administration advised the Papuan Task Force to leave the state-owned building that it has claimed for its headquarters, Antara reported on Tuesday.

The civilian force has occupied Gedung Kesenian, in Jayapura, the capital of Irian Jaya since June.

Jayapura Police Chief Supt. Daud Sihombing said the local administration planned to return The Art Building to its proper function.

"We have notified the Papuan Task Force commander and asked them to abide by the local government order," Daud said, adding that police gave them three days to leave the building.

Daud said if the illegal occupants ignored the notification, police would take stern measures.

The building is a heritage building from the Dutch Colonial administration.

Papuan Task Force was established after the Papuan Presidium Council declared independence from the unitary Republic of Indonesia.
