April 2, 2002 Inquiry commission on Theys' death soon to report to Megawati JAKARTA (JP): A commission set up by the government to investigate the mysterious death of Papuan Presidium Council leader Theys Hiyo Eluay said on Tuesday that it was ready to report the results of its investigation to President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
"The commission has concluded its investigation of the case and will soon report (the results) to the President," commission chairman Koesparmono Irsan said in the Papua provincial capital of Jayapura as quoted by Antara after briefing local officials on the commission's investigation.
Koesparmono, however, declined to reveal details of the investigation.
"We will also meet with the chief of the Indonesian Military (TNI) to arrange the schedule and venue for the trial of the case," he said.
He further said that the commission's report touched on the latest developments in the search for Theys' driver, Aristoteles Masoka.
Aristoteles, who reportedly called Theys' wife to tell her that Theys had been abducted, has gone missing.
Koesparmono said the commission had contacted some embassies, including he U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, to check if they had issued a visa to Aristoteles.
He said the commission would continue its search for the driver, based on the information at hand.
Theys was found dead inside his car on the outskirts of Jayapura on Nov. 11, 2001, a few hours after he attended the National Heroes Day commemoration at the Jayapura headquarters of the Army's Special Force (Kopassus).
Chief of the Papua Provincial Police Insp. Gen. Made Mangku Pastika and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Endriartono Sutarto have said that several Kopassus members may have been responsible for Theys' death. |
