Al-Qaeda Member Arrested in Indonesia
Laksamana.Net - Police in Indonesia have arrested a key fundraiser for Osama bin Laden’s Al-
Qaeda terrorist network, CNN reported Thursday (27/6/02).
The report said Kuwaiti national Omar al-Faruq. alias Mahmoud bin Ahmad Assegaf, was arrested June 5.
He was described as a significant fund-raiser for Al-Qaeda but was not listed in the top 20 of the group’s leadership.
Al-Faruq's telephone number and name were reportedly found in a phone book discovered during the arrest of former Al-Qaeda operations chief Abu Zubayda in Pakistan.
It’s now unclear where al-Faruq is being held.
President Megawati Sukarnoputri’s administration has been under pressure from abroad to take strong measures against Islamic extremists in the world's most populous Muslim country in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the US.
Megawati has declined to do so lest she upset Islamic groups, although the government has not been afraid to go after foreigners wanted for links to terrorism.
