WA Govt bans uranium mining for nuclear uses


The Western Australian Government has announced a ban on mining uranium for
nuclear purposes, under mining leases granted from today.

The Development Minister, Clive Brown, says the Mining Act will be amended.

It will only allow the mining of minerals specified in a lease.

Similar bans have been put in place for thorium, which is also used in
nuclear reactors.

The change is not expected to affect current lease holders.
