Petition to the government of the Republic of Indonesia for human-rights, against military terror in Indonesia
The Hague, 17 august 2001
At the day of festivities concerning the 56th anniversary of the Republic Indonesia we ask your attention for something which will be forgotten
in the celebrations.
At present, in Indonesia there are still occurring wide ranges of various human rights violations. Selective murders, disappearances, political imprisonment, censorship, land-evictions, robbery of wood and other natural resources etceteras, all for the benefit of the regime in Jakarta.
These human rights violations occur in the whole of Indonesia, and especially in the areas of the Moluccas, West-Papua and Aceh. The situation in East Timor, as well in West-Timor, is still very tense.
We call upon your government to:
* withdraw your military presence from West-Papua, the Moluccas and Aceh and restore the peace-negotiations
* withdraw the Jihad-militias, which are trained and armed by the
Indonesian military, from the Moluccas * give back sovereignty to the Moluccas,
Aceh and West-Papua
* restore the civil government in Aceh
* recognise the West Papuan peoples' right of selfdetermination, as their human right to decide their own political destination. And to realise that the denial of peoples' right of selfdetermination is the prime of all human rights violations.
* not interfere with the election-process at East Timor
* protect the safety of the Timorese refugees at West-Timor and to disarm the pro-Indonesian militias
* respect human rights and freedom of press
* install a Tribunal to prosecute the generals and soldiers who are guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity
All these proposed measures will be, if initiated, a step closer towards an Indonesia, which will be more democratic, where various populations have direct access to their resources and can live together in peace, without the constructed military oppression of the myth of the Indonesian Unity State.
If you need detailed information from grass roots and human rightsorganisations about the current situation in the above-described areas, you can contact us at any time.
We hope for a sincere answer.
