They are on trial in January being threatened with life imprisonment for treason. They were previously on hunger strike. 24 Jan 2005 - 8 Arrested in Wamena

We have heard that eight civilians got arrested by Indonesia mobile
police force (Brimob) in Tolikara Puncak Jaya Wamena.

The following are all being held in Wamena Police Station:

1. Simele Gere
2. Natan Wenda
3. Menis Wenda
4. Yohanis Heluka
5. Solamin Weya
6. Yatimin Weya
7. Benyyus Kogoya
8. John Heluka

They are suspected of being members of Kelly Kwalik's OPM group but we
have been told they are civilians who live in Tolicara Puncak Jaya. The
police got their information by bribery and threats.

Right now there is a big military operation going on in the highlands of
West Papua.

There are concerns for the safety of these 8 prisoners who risk torture
or being dissapeared. Please phone the Wamena police station and police
chief as soon as possible and ask that these prisoners be released and
not mistreated. The numbers to phone are:

1. Chief of Police in Wamena: +62969 31072
2. Wamena Police Office (Kapolres) +62(0)969-31110
3. Wamena Regent Office (Bupati) +62(0)969-31005

17 Dec 2004 - Many Arrested During Elections

Since the election of Indonesian President Yudohyono violence against the
people of West Papua has massively increased. There are currently many
recently arrested prisoners needing our support, two of whom are on hunger
strike. Also on 15th December nine prisoners previously being held in
Wamena prison were taken without warning and moved hundreds of miles to a
prison in Makassar, no reason was given for the move but there is great
concern for their lives as many prisoners previously moved from Papua to
other parts of Indonesia have never returned having been poisoned in far
away prisons.

06 May 2004 - Major Update of Prisoner Lists

We apologise for not updating these lists for a while but we have just added all prisoners arrested over the last year. We are pleased to announce that Lanek Kenelak and Lion Murib have both been released and we have received letters from both of them thanking people for the support they received while in prison. They were both really happily surprised to get support from the outside and both said that the letters and news of phone calls made them feel strong! So please keep supporting Papuan prisoners!

A number of events have caused most of the prison sentences since Sept. Firstly, seven people have been accused of involvement in the arms raid on the Wamena armoury in April 2003. Two have received life sentences and the other five are serving twenty years each! They are all being held in Wamena prison. On 5th October 2003 the Indonesian army attacked some OPM memebers in Yalengga village shooting nine dead, five others from this village have now ened up in Wamena prison. Also in October 16 members of the Presidium Council were arrested accused of inciting violence in the "bloody Wamena" incident in 2000. They had all previously been arrested, served part of a sentence and had been released but the new administration have rounded them up again stating they have not completed their sentences. All 16 have now been moved to Abepura prison. Around the 1st Dec 2003 yet more people were arrested in connection with flag raising ceremonies. And finally in the run up to the 5th April elections which saw a wide spread boycott across Papua people were shot and others beaten and are being held under conditions of arrest in the Wamena hospital.

18 Sept 2003 - Aten Dimi moved to Abepura

We now announce that Aten Dimi (27) who was arrested in 1999 for raising the morning star flag in Nabire has now been moved to Lembaga Abepura. He is serving a six year sentence. So why not write to him??

16 Sept 2003 - Six Soldiers on Trial

Six soldiers are now on trial in Jayapura in connection with the Wamena arms raid in April. See the following article and phone the Jayapura police regarding this, they could face death sentences. See here for more details.

11 Sept 2003 - Elly Togodly safe

Thanks to all who phoned Wamena police on this date. DeMMaK tribal elder Elly Togdly was called to the police station in connection with the arms raid back in April. He was released safely later the same day. He said a big "wa wa wa" (thank you) to all who have supported him and made him feel safer during this ordeal.

Aug 2003 - Early release for two prisoners!

The following two prisoners, both of whom we have telephoned the prisons about have now been released. They have been released before completion of their sentences! They were previously being held in Lembaga Abepura...

1. Ilion Murib - arrested 2nd December 2002 - age 34
2. Allius Tabuni - arrested 19th December 2002 – age 36
