17th May 2000

Mr. Sem Karoba
Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Alliance of West Papua Students
and the West Papua Community
26 Addison Crescent
Oxford

Dear Sem

Thank you very much for coming to meet me in the House of Commons this morning to brief me about the situation in West Papua.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to discuss with you current developments in West Papua. I will deposit in the House of Commons Library a copy of the document you kindly presented to me so that it can be read by other Members of Parliament.

As you know, I am deeply concerned about the human rights situation in West Papua and am delighted to hear that West Papua Congress 2 is to take place on May 29th I very much hope that the Congress convenes without hindrance and am pleased that the Indonesian Government seems to be adopting a positive approach in helping the Congress to take place.

I would be most grateful if you could pass on my good wishes to all those attending. I wish the Congress well in its endeavors to establish the wishes of the people on West Papua's relationship with Indonesia. The international community is watching with interest to see the outcome of this discussion and I would be grateful if you could let me know what is decided.

I look forward to visiting West Papua in the near future. Please be assured of my best wishes for a successful outcome to the Congress.

Yours sincerely
