source: Radio New Zealand International audio web site, Wellington, in English 0310 gmt 20 Mar 02 Free Papua group campaigns for lawsuit against UN's role in 1969 vote A pro-independence Papuan group says its global campaign demanding a review of the UN's role in the 1969 independence referendum for the province is thefirst step towards a lawsuit against the world body. The campaign, led by theFree Papua Movement, or OPM, was launched in Australia yesterday, and will continue in 10 countries until the end of March.
The OPM's international spokesperson, John Ondawame, says the UN must admit that it played a negative role in the so-called act of free choice.
Papua had been annexed by Indonesia in 1963 and formalized their control in 1969 through a UN ballot of a little over 1,000 Papuans. Mr Ondawame, who is also a member of the Papua Presidium Council, says the voters were hand-picked by the Indonesian government. He says international law experts from Cornell University are preparing a legal case against the UN and the countries involved.
Ondawame This is against Papuans' right, and we have to bring those set of principles to the international court of justice. And the lawyers' group from Cornell University and others are trying to put it together, and some academics from the UK, Ireland and also the international jurists' commission have committed to look into that question. John Ondawame says a petition will be handed to the UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan, at the end of the month. |
