MP indecisive over fate of detained Kopassus members
JAKARTA (JP): Military Police Headquarters remains indecisive over the status of three members of the Army's Special Force (Kopassus), detained for their alleged involvement in the death of Papua Presidium Council leader Theys Hiyo Eluay last November.
"The three Kopassus members have been detained at the National Military Police's detention center since April 10. They will be questioned next Monday," Military Police chief Maj. Gen. Sulaiman AB said as quoted by SCTV television.
However, he said the status of the three might change according to the results of their questioning on Monday and the testimony of other witnesses.
"They might become suspects in the case or witnesses," he said.
There are at least four teams investigating the death of Theys on Nov. 11, 2001. The Papuan leader's body was found a few hours after he attended a National Heroes' Day commemoration at the Jayapura headquarters of Kopassus. One team was set up by thegovernment, another by Army Headquarters, the third by National Police Headquarters and the fourth by the National Military Police Headquarters.
The team set up by the government is slated to report the results of its investigation to President Megawati Soekarnoputri later this month.
