Annan to visit Indonesia, E. Timor this month

JAKARTA (JP): United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is scheduled to leave New York next week on a week-long visit to Indonesia, Cyprus and East Timor, his spokesman said Thursday.

Annan will visit Indonesia from May 17 to 19 to meet President Megawati Soekarnoputri and Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda, according to .

The visit to Indonesia will be made after visiting Cyprus from May 14 to 16, where he would hold separate meetings on May 15 with Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart Rauf Denktash.

"That evening, he (Annan) will host a dinner for the two leaders at the residence of the head of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)," spokesman Fred Eckhard said.

Annan will travel to Dili, the capital of East Timor, on May 19, the day before the UN-administered territory becomes independent from Indonesia.

"He will be back in New York on May 22," Eckhard said.
