Don’t Forget Indonesia
(Editor, Meath Chronicle)
Dear Sir - This month, the people of East Timor celebrate three years of independence. Despite this, many of the East
Timorese people who fled their country in 1999 are prevented from returning.
Furthermore, many of the people who committed violations of human rights there were never brought to trial. The same security
forces that are alleged to have committed crimes against humanity in East Timor are now freely operating in Aceh and West
Papua. According to media reports, bodies are often discovered bearing marks of torture.
If the perpetrators are not brought to justice, these violations of human rights - torture, disappearances and deportations -
will continue.
While we celebrate the independence of East Timor, let’s not forget the thousands of others throughout Indonesia who continue
to suffer torture, imprisonment or execution. Irish people were to the fore in highlighting the problems of Indonesia three
years ago. The problems have not gone away. Please do whatever you can to highlight the situation, and in particular, to keep
Indonesia on the agenda of the international community.
Yours Sincerely,
PAULINE CONNOLLY,
Navan Group,
Amnesty International.
